FIFA will review security and transport plans in Mexico before the World Cup, president Claudia Sheinbaum said on Friday, after last weekend’s matches were postponed amid drug cartel violence.

Chaos gripped parts of the country for hours after a military operation in Jalisco. Several fixtures were postponed, notably in Guadalajara, which is due to stage four World Cup matches between 11 June and 19 July.

Earlier in the week, Sheinbaum had insisted there was no risk for supporters travelling to Mexico, despite violence following the death of Nemesio Oseguera, known as El Mencho, the country’s most wanted cartel leader.

Sheinbaum also spoke by phone with FIFA president Gianni Infantino, who reassured her about the smooth staging of matches in Mexico.

Beyond security, Infantino asked for traffic in Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara to be examined to ensure mobility for all supporters.
