Real Sociedad lifted their fourth Copa del Rey after a 2-2 draw with Atlético de Madrid, prevailing on penalties.
El Periódico Mediterráneo reports that the final swung on five decisive moments. After just 14 seconds, Ander Barrenetxea headed in Gonçalo Guedes’s cross, slipping his effort inside Juan Musso’s post. Nahuel Molina and Giuliano Simeone failed to clear, and Barrenetxea, 12 centimetres shorter than Matteo Ruggeri, still won the duel.
At 18 minutes and 3 seconds, Ademola Lookman levelled. Julián Álvarez surged through the middle and exchanged passes with Antoine Griezmann, leaving Lookman to control with his right then strike left-footed from outside the box beyond Unai Marrero.
On 42 minutes and 48 seconds, Carlos Soler’s free-kick into the area caused panic. Musso’s late charge flattened Guedes after his header, and referee Javier Alberola pointed to the spot. Mikel Oyarzabal converted.
With 82 minutes and 24 seconds played, Álvarez forced extra time. He controlled with a right-footed backheel, shifted onto his left and lashed an unstoppable shot past Marrero.
With extra time unable to separate the sides, it went to penalties. Unai Marrero saved Alexander Sorloth’s first effort, Carlos Soler scored, then Marrero denied Álvarez. Musso kept Atlético alive by stopping Oskarsson, after which nobody missed, as Nico González, Luka Sucic, Thiago Almada, Aihen Muñoz and Álex Baena all scored before Pablo Marín found the top corner to complete the victory.
