Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea was brutally dropped for Fiorentina’s Serie A clash against Venezia over the weekend, following a tough outing in the club’s previous outing.

Earlier this month, De Gea made his sensational return to football after more than one year without a club.

He permanently parted ways with United last summer after 12 years of loyal service, which saw him amass 545 appearances for the Reds.

De Gea was allowed to leave as a free agent, with the club replacing him with Andre Onana. The Spaniard signed a one-year contract with Fiorentina. There is an option to extend his stay with the Italian outfit for an additional 12 months.

The goalkeeper made his debut for Fiorentina in their Europa Conference League qualifying fixture against Puskas Akademia last week.

It turned out to be a disastrous debut for De Gea, who conceded two soft goals, including a penalty.

Fiorentina were held to a 3-3 draw by Puskas Akademia – a poor result considering they were seen as strong favourites to win the tie.

Just days after the European clash, De Gea was dropped from Fiorentina’s starting line-up for Sunday’s meeting with Venezia at The Stadio Artemio Franchi.

The United legend had to be content with a place on the bench as Pietro Terracciano received the nod ahead of him.

Terracciano kept a clean sheet as the match ended in a goalless stalemate.

La Viola return to action on Thursday night when they face Puskas Akademia again, this time away from home. The winner of the match will secure progression to the group stages of the competition.

All eyes will certainly be on Fiorentina boss Raffaele Palladino and whether he’ll deploy De Gea between the sticks.
