Fireworks disturbed Benfica’s overnight stay in Gaia at around three am on the eve of their cup meeting with Porto, according to Glorioso 1904. The display outside the team hotel interrupted the players’ rest.
Such incidents are not new in clashes between the rivals, often viewed as attempts by supporters to unsettle opponents before major matches. The intensity of the Porto and Benfica rivalry means details off the pitch are closely watched by both teams and the authorities.
Despite the disruption, José Mourinho’s side kept their focus and continued preparations. Logistics and security planning were used to minimise any impact on performance.
On selection, Enzo Barrenechea, previously considered out, should be involved, as should António Silva. Bruma, although back training with team-mates, is expected to miss this tie.
The quarter-final is scheduled for Wednesday, 14 January 2026, with kick-off at 20:45. The tie will decide a place in the semi-finals of the Taça de Portugal Generali Tranquilidade and will be shown on RTP 1.
