Benfica have suspended five club members following racist incidents during their Champions League meeting with Real Madrid earlier this month.
The club confirmed that the individuals have had their memberships suspended and their season tickets revoked with immediate effect. Disciplinary proceedings are under way and could result in permanent expulsion.
The action relates to events during the first leg of the play-off tie at the Estádio da Luz on February 17.
In a statement, Benfica said the behaviour in question was “of a racist nature” and “incompatible with the values and principles of the club.” The Eagles reiterated that they have zero tolerance towards discrimination and will act firmly in such cases.
The match was paused after Vinícius Júnior reported alleged racist abuse, prompting referee François Letexier to trigger the anti-racism protocol.
UEFA has opened its own investigation into the matter. If breaches are proven, regulations allow for significant suspensions.
Real Madrid later advanced 3-1 on aggregate after winning the return leg in Spain.
