Sunderland aim to strengthen over the final two months of the window as they prepare for the Europa League alongside AC Milan and Juventus. Chelsea’s interest in captain Granit Xhaka follows his pivotal first season under Regis Le Bris, when Europe was secured for only the second time in the club’s long history.
According to Sunderland Echo, identifying players entering the final year of their contracts could offer value, and five names stand out.
Rising talent Shea Charles looks set to secure a Premier League move this summer. The 22-year-old Northern Ireland midfielder, a team-mate of Trai Hume and Dan Ballard, reportedly drew an unsuccessful bid from Leeds United and brings tenacity, energy and composure on the ball.
Girona’s Arnau Martinez, capped 12 times at Spain Under-21 level, is widely expected to move after relegation from La Liga. The 23-year-old La Masia alumnus has over 200 senior appearances and Champions League minutes against PSG, Arsenal and Feyenoord in 2024/25.
With Robin Roefs attracting outside interest after a highly consistent debut campaign, contingency in goal would be prudent. Olympiakos keeper Konstantinos Tzolakis, 23 and capped nine times by Greece, kept 23 clean sheets in 43 games as AEK Athens edged the title race.
Lorient’s Arthur Avom has been linked with Wearside and other Premier League clubs. The 14-cap Cameroon international offers midfield versatility that could aid Sunderland’s return to European competition for the first time since 1973.
Bayern Munich prospect Arijon Ibrahimovic, 20, is in the final year of his deal and has been linked with moves in the Premier League, Serie A and Eredivisie. The attacking midfielder has four senior Bayern outings and loans at Lazio, Frosinone and Heidenheim.
