Five reasons behind Grêmio’s 1-0 defeat to São José

Grêmio’s Arena bow ended in a 1-0 defeat to São José, lacking individual spark and collective cohesion. Playing behind closed doors spared them early-season jeers.

According to Globo.com, the second outing was undermined by a lack of rhythm. Luís Castro rotated heavily, picking an XI different to the Avenida opener after a 14-day pre-season. The right-back João Pedro had not played since May due to treatment for a thrombosis in his right shoulder.

Build-up down the left faltered without Marlon, recovering from injury, and with Caio Paulista on the bench. Centre-back Viery filled in at full-back and offered little going forward, while his pairing with Kannemann did not click.

Willian was used centrally and did not provide the creative link expected. He prefers the left and, since arriving in September, has yet to convince with his back to goal. His most effective role so far is wide left.

On the flanks, Aravena and Gabriel Mec disappointed, leaving the attack without depth or end product. The youngster worked hard defensively and sought one-on-ones, but Roger and Amuzu added energy and threat after coming on in the second half.

The midfield pivot was the fifth concern. With Arthur on the pitch, issues ease, but without him control is elusive. Cuéllar and Dodi have not matched his influence, a problem carried over from last year and evident on Wednesday against São José.

For Luís Castro, the job looks a long one and this display underlined how early it still is.
