After years of hesitation, Maxime Lopez, Paris FC’s midfield dynamo, finally seems ready to consider representing Algeria—should an official call-up come his way.

In an interview with the French channel Canal+, Lopez (27) revealed his openness to joining the ranks of the “Desert Warriors”:

“So far, there haven’t been any official talks, but we’ve exchanged a few words about it. If the offer came, I’d welcome it with open arms. Honestly, yes.”

Some might think his decision is driven by the looming Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup, but Lopez dismisses that notion:

“Even if it wasn’t a competition year, I’d accept the invitation. I’m an ambitious player and I’ve always wanted to represent a national team.”

A surprising turnaround

Despite 13 appearances with France’s U20 and Olympic teams, Lopez remains eligible for Algeria thanks to his Kabyle heritage on his mother’s side.

“I’ve always spoken about France, because Algeria never contacted me. I don’t think it should always be up to me to take the initiative,” he explained.

The player clarified that things have changed recently:

“The Algerian Federation recently got in touch to ask about my position. I confirmed that I’d accept the invitation if it came. We’ll see what the future holds.”

He also admitted he’s never visited Algeria, but is enthusiastic about the prospect: “I’ve never been to Algeria, but I’d be delighted to go as soon as the opportunity arises.”

This shift marks a stark contrast to his previous statements: “I never thought about playing for Algeria. My dream was always to wear the France shirt.”

With the 2025 AFCON approaching and the 2026 World Cup just months away, it seems Lopez has been inspired to reconnect with his Algerian roots after years of uncertainty and refusal.
