Argentina’s run to the 2026 World Cup semi-finals has put Flaco López on the brink of a Palmeiras first. If the Albiceleste take the title, he would become the club’s 10th world champion while on their books and the first foreigner to do it.

According to Nosso Palestra, the forward is the only player currently based in Brazilian football among the semi-finalists. Argentina face England on Wednesday 15 for a place in the final, where Spain await after qualifying on Tuesday 14.

Every Palmeiras player to win the World Cup while representing the club has been Brazilian. The roll call runs from Mazzola in 1958, Djalma Santos, Vavá and Zequinha in 1962, Leão and Baldochi in 1970, Zinho and Mazinho in 1994, to Marcos in 2002.

Palmeiras have also sent World Cup players to other nations, including Arce and Gamarra with Paraguay, Freddy Rincón and Miguel Borja with Colombia, Valdivia with Chile and Víctor Diogo with Uruguay, none of whom lifted the trophy while at the club.

Signed in 2022, Flaco López is experiencing his first World Cup with Argentina’s senior team. Having forced his way into Lionel Scaloni’s recent squads, he now stands two wins from etching his name into the club’s history.
