Flamengo have agreed a deal to appoint Leonardo Jardim. His contract is, in principle, to run until the end of 2027.
According to Globo.com, the 51-year-old is expected in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday. He replaces Filipe Luís, who was dismissed after the 8-0 win over Madureira in the Campeonato Carioca semi-final. Jardim is expected to meet the squad on Wednesday at Ninho do Urubu, with a planned day off cancelled.
Talks between the club and the coach’s representatives had been progressing before Filipe was told. The former full-back learned of his dismissal shortly after his press conference at the Maracanã.
Jardim has been out of football since leaving Cruzeiro in December for personal reasons. He spoke about family at the time and said he would pause his coaching career to protect his physical and mental health. His contract there ran until the end of 2026, but he triggered a clause to depart.
At Cruzeiro, he reached the Copa do Brasil semi-finals and finished third in the Brasileirão, earning direct entry to the 2026 Libertadores group stage. His record was 55 matches, 26 wins, 18 draws and 11 defeats.
He began his career in Portuguese football and enjoyed success with Monaco between 2014 and 2020, when he worked with Mbappé. He has also coached in the Middle East, including Al-Hilal and Al-Rayyan.
