The CBF has named Rafael Rodrigo Klein to take charge of Flamengo v Chapecoense on 22 July, a decision that has provoked anger at the club, according to Coluna Do Fla.

Figures linked to Flamengo’s football department are said to be indignant, citing what they view as frequent mistakes by Klein in the team’s matches. They had hoped he would be vetoed from upcoming fixtures.

A key grievance concerns perceived inconsistency. Early this year, in the Supercopa do Brasil against Corinthians, Klein sent off Carrascal after half-time.

On the pitch he did not initially treat Carrascal’s challenge on Breno Bidon as a red-card offence. After the interval he decided to dismiss the Flamengo midfielder, angering players and supporters.

There was further controversy at the Arena da Baixada when Lucas Paquetá suffered a heavy tackle from Felipinho of Athletico-PR and Klein showed only a yellow card.

Despite the discontent, Flamengo remain focused on the season ahead. They sit second in the Brasileirão on 34 points, seven behind leaders Palmeiras. In the Libertadores they face Cruzeiro in the last 16.

During the World Cup break, the squad trained at Ninho do Urubu and in the Algarve, Portugal, playing three friendlies. The programme concludes on Friday 17, when they face Olimpia (PAR) at 20:00 Brasília time in Brasília.
