Flamengo are optimistic about signing Thiago Almada and are awaiting the midfielder’s decision after his World Cup campaign, according to Globo.com.

Talks are aligned with Atlético Madrid and the player’s representative, and the deal would proceed once Almada gives the green light. A decision is expected in the coming days.

Flamengo believe they hold an edge over River Plate, with a package worth more than the Argentines’ proposal yet still below 28 million euros. Their recent dealings with Atlético, including the Samuel Lino move, and a firmer payment plan with fewer instalments also count in their favour.

The club think their project could appeal to Almada, while personal factors such as a return to life in Rio and family considerations are part of his choice. An offer from Europe would change the picture, as that path has long been his priority.

Before the World Cup he turned down approaches from Russia, Ukraine and Saudi Arabia, and in the absence of European bids he has weighed a return to South American football. River were previously confident and submitted a 20 million euros offer in Madrid for 50 percent of his economic rights, but Atlético are still seeking full financial guarantees.

Alongside Almada, Flamengo are working on deals for a winger and a centre-forward and do not plan major spending beyond the Argentine.
