After victories over Auckland City (10-0) and Boca Juniors (2-1) in the Club World Cup group stage, Bayern Munich rotated their squad for the final Group C match against Benfica.
Despite creating numerous chances, the German champions suffered a frustrating 1-0 defeat, allowing Benfica to leapfrog them to top spot.
Finishing second in Group C means Bayern will face Brazilian side Flamengo in the round of 16.
Coached by former Brazil international Filipe Luis, Flamengo impressively topped Group D by defeating Esperance Tunis (2-0) and Chelsea (3-1) before drawing with Los Angeles FC (1-1).
Confident but realistic, Luis praised Bayern’s pedigree ahead of the knockout tie.
“Bayern are part of the elite, a giant, a European colossus,” he said ahead of the game.
“They're dominant and have an extraordinary squad, with an excellent coach. They're a club that inspires us and gives us ideas to copy, but in a game, anything can happen.”
This will be Bayern’s first-ever competitive meeting with Flamengo, and only their second against a Brazilian club. The last came in the 1976 Intercontinental Cup, when Bayern defeated Cruzeiro 2-0 in Munich before a goalless draw in the return leg in Brazil.
Both teams head into Sunday’s clash without any fresh injury concerns. The match kicks off on June 29 at 22:00 CEST at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
The winner will move on to the Club World Cup quarter-finals, where they will face either Paris Saint-Germain or Inter Miami.
Flamengo: Rossi - Wesley Franca, Danilo, Leo Pereira, Alex Sandro - Pulgar, Jorginho - Gerson, de Arrascaeta, Luiz Araujo - Plata.
FC Bayern Munich: Neuer - Laimer, Tah, Upamecano, Stanisic - Goretzka, Kimmich - Olise, Musiala, Coman - Kane.
