Sunderland’s return to the Premier League has been a success, and with survival almost sealed, Florent Ghisfoli’s recruitment is under review. Across the last two windows, 17 signings are assessed here, featuring two 10s and one 3.
Sunderland Echo notes that Kristjaan Speakman’s exit last month underlined Ghisolfi’s central role, having driven both windows. He is now tasked with sustaining momentum this summer.
Granit Xhaka is judged a generational addition, rated 10 out of 10 for leadership and control. Goalkeeper Robin Roefs also earns 10 out of 10, a revelation after moves for Marcin Bulka and Djordje Petrovic fell through.
Nordi Mukiele and Noah Sadiki score nine and a half out of 10, while Omar Alderete and Brian Brobbey take nine out of 10, the latter a relative bargain at an initial £17 million. Reinildo is eight out of 10. Chemsdine Talbi, Lutsharel Geertruida and Melker Ellborg are each seven and a half out of 10.
Habib Diarra shows promise after injury and AFCON, seven out of 10. Bertrand Traoré is seven out of 10 after a bright start curtailed by AFCON and injury. Nilson Angulo begins well, seven out of 10.
Simon Adingra and Marc Guiu are at five out of 10, the former not quite a stylistic fit despite quality, the latter recalled early. Arthur Masuaku is three out of 10 and a summer exit looks inevitable. Jocelin Ta Bi is not rated due to early injury, and Enzo Le Fée is excluded as his deal pre-dated Ghisolfi’s arrival.
Ghisolfi blended long-tracked talent with experience, swiftly grasping Le Bris’s identity and the league’s demands. The brief now is to keep adding young quality without losing the defensive solidity that underpinned this season. From summer he will work with his own structure, so any shift in markets will be worth watching after an exceptional start.
