Sunderland sporting director Florent Ghisolfi set out a clear message on identity and unity after the Black Cats’ comeback 2-1 derby win at Newcastle. He was on the pitch at full-time at St James’ Park, embracing captain Granit Xhaka as celebrations followed.

The sporting director said in a post that pride must be matched by togetherness and hard work, adding that nothing is more important than the club’s heart and identity. He also spoke of adding a little more history in this rivalry.

Newcastle led before Sunderland rallied strongly after the break. Chemsdine Talbi, 20 years and 317 days, became the club’s youngest Premier League scorer against Newcastle with the equaliser, then Brian Brobbey struck the latest ever decisive goal in a Premier League meeting between the sides.

The result sealed Sunderland’s first league double over Newcastle since the 2014-15 season and stretched their unbeaten league run in the fixture to 11 games. Newcastle remain without a league derby win since 2011 and have not beaten Sunderland at St James’ Park in the league since 2010. Eddie Howe’s side have dropped 22 points from winning positions in the Premier League this season, more than any other team.

In their first season back in the Premier League under Régis Le Bris, Sunderland have ridden injuries and disruption to build momentum. The jubilant scenes in front of the 2,000 travelling supporters underlined the bond between players and fans.

Sunderland are on 43 points and are effectively safe, with focus now on how far they can push over the closing weeks.
