Sunderland are accelerating their summer plans, with Florent Ghisolfi weighing up bids for a Serie A winger and centre-back.
Corriere dello Sport reports representatives of AS Roma winger Matías Soulé are in the UK this weekend for talks with Sunderland and Fulham. Soulé is known to Sunderland’s director of football, who previously took him to Rome from Juventus, and he has featured regularly, but Roma are open to a sale to bolster their UEFA financial position and reinvest before the Champions League. A fee of around £30 million for the 23-year-old has been widely reported, and Sunderland want a new right winger after Bertrand Traoré’s exit.
Sunderland also want another centre-back and, according to reports in Italy, could lodge an official bid for Sassuolo’s Bosnia international Tarik Muharemović next week. He has other Premier League interest, and Juventus retain a 50% sell-on clause after selling him to Sassuolo last summer. Alternatives remain, with Jhon Lucumí under consideration as he enters his final year at Bologna.
Caught Offside says Arsenal and Liverpool are weighing moves for former Sunderland loanee Lutsharel Geertruida. Sunderland remain interested after his strong finish and role in Europa League qualification. Their option to buy is understood to have expired, and the 25-year-old is assessing his next step.
Ghisolfi has said this window is about stability and improving quality rather than volume. He cited Athletic Bilbao as a reference point, adding last summer felt like a sprint while this one is a more precise marathon, with any signing needing to fit Sunderland’s values.
