Ferran Torres will be named a favourite son of Foios after helping deliver Spain's second World Cup. The council has contacted his camp to stage a ceremony and begun the process to grant its highest civic distinction.

According to Superdeporte, a banner now hangs on the town hall facade to symbolise the town's pride in a neighbour who has taken Foios to the top of world football.

The municipality of about 8,000 people in L’Horta Nord, north of València, already has its municipal ground named after him.

Torres grew up in a ground-floor flat, playing his first matches in the inner courtyard with his dogs as makeshift defenders, and they remain his companions. After a year of school futsal he was recruited by Valencia’s Academy as a prebenjamín. By seven he showed striking ambition and promise.

Coaches pushed him to use his left foot, and with it almost 20 years later he broke Dibu’s resistance in New Jersey after more than 100 minutes.

His parents split when he was 12, complicating travel to training, so Valencia offered him a place in the residence for out-of-town boys. He would cry on Sunday evenings after being dropped off, an ordeal he says helped him mature. Off the pitch he has remained somewhat introverted.

His biggest support was his older sister, Arantxa. Years later they got matching ankle tattoos, an anchor with the motto “I refuse to sink”. He lives by another line, you try, you make mistakes, you get back up.
