Forest begin Dyche era with victory over Porto | OneFootball

Sean Dyche's tenure at Nottingham Forest got off to a winning start after handing FC Porto their first defeat of the season thanks to two penalty kicks.

When Porto manager Francesco Farioli took over at the Portuguese side, it's likely he didn't think his first defeat would come against a team managed by the former Burnley and Everton boss.

But that's exactly what happened with the mood at the City Ground far better than it has been previously in recent weeks.

The home side took the lead from the penalty spot inside the first 20 minutes when former Southampton man Jan Bednarek was penalised for a handball.

Morgan Gibbs-White stepped up and sent goalkeeper Diogo Costa to make it 1-0 to Forest with the new man in charge hardly reacting.

Porto looked far off the boil than what they have done after an impressive start to the season although they did have the ball in the net. Bednarek thought he had redeemed his earlier error when he finished after Forest failed to defend a set-piece only for VAR to intervene with Samu Aghehowa offside in the build-up.

VAR was on call again to help Forest double their lead late on. Half-time substitute Nicolò Savona had been given a yellow card for diving when he went down in the box under the challenge of Martim Fernandes. 

Indeed, Savona certainly looked like he was going down easily but Fernandes made the mistake of going for a second bite at which point what was likely to have been a dive turned into a penalty for the Reds.

This time it was Igor Jesus who stepped up and sent his penalty straight down the middle with Costa again guessing the wrong way as he dived to the right.

From that point on, Forest fans could enjoy the rest of their evening and their first clean sheet of the season. It's been a rocky start to the season but there will be hope that things are now starting to settle ahead of a trip to fourth-placed Bournemouth on Sunday.
