Nottingham Forest, Leeds United’s opening opponents, have made Austria international Xaver Schlager their first signing under Oliver Glasner. The free-transfer arrival has spoken of aiming to help the club back into Europe.
According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, Glasner announced in January that he would leave Crystal Palace at the end of the season, then took charge at Forest earlier this month after Vitor Pereira’s departure. The Reds went through four managers in 2025-26, were threatened by relegation and finished fifth-bottom, three points behind newly promoted Leeds.
Despite the turmoil, Forest reached last season’s Europa League final. Schlager referenced the club’s European Cup under Brian Clough and said he wants to give everything, relishing a new challenge with a squad he considers strong.
The Austria international has joined on a free after his RB Leipzig contract expired. The new campaign starts with Leeds visiting the City Ground on Saturday, August 22.
Elsewhere, Ipswich Town have completed a rapid triple signing, bringing in Abdul Fatawu from Leicester City, Issa Diop from Fulham and Kayne van Oevelen from FC Volendam. Fatawu is £20m plus £3m in add-ons, Diop is £8.5m and goalkeeper van Oevelen is around £3.4m, taking the outlay to £34.9m including add-ons.
