Former Arsenal fan favourite training with Crystal Palace ahead of possible move | OneFootball

Takehiro Tomiyasu is training with Crystal Palace and could potentially sign a contract with the south London club, with Venezia’s attempts to sign him stalling.

Following recent media reports of Venezia interest in Takehiro Tomiyasu, La Gazzetta dello Sport wrote on Tuesday that updates on the situation were expected imminently.

Those updates have now arrived, but not in the manner many expected. James McNicholas reports for The Athletic that Tomiyasu is now training with Crystal Palace, with a view to a possible move.

There’s a chance Tomiyasu will feature for Palace in a friendly match later this week, and he’s interested in returning to the Premier League.

Tomiyasu had reportedly reached an agreement with Venezia, but the Serie A club needed to free up one of their two squad spaces reserved for newly-signed non-EU players before they could complete the deal.

The situation was complex, and perhaps those delays have ended their hopes of a move.

Tomiyasu has been on his summer holidays in recent weeks, having participated in the World Cup with Japan. The defender made three appearances and two starts in Japan’s four games at the tournament, before Gabriel Martinelli’s late winner for Brazil sent them home.

Prior to the World Cup, Tomiyasu made his long-awaited return to the pitch with Ajax, appearing seven times for the Dutch club on a short-term contract.

The ex-Arsenal man probably would have played more if not for a red card in mid-April, but he only had a bench role after his return from suspension.

Tomiyasu recently spoke out about his frustrations during the latter period of his spell at Arsenal, saying: “I never imagined I would go through such a tough time at Arsenal, because I’ve always taken great care of my body. I’ve probably done more than anyone else.

“My first six months in London were amazing. It was like a dream. I can understand if my approach was wrong. Some players don’t get injured even if they party after a match. I didn’t do anything reckless, yet it happened to me. I felt frustrated at that time.

“Eventually, you realize that things happen in life that you can’t control. There’s no point in getting angry about them. Everything goes on.”
