The media regulator’s refusal to license Benfica FM’s FM broadcast has prompted fresh scrutiny inside the club, with former vice-president Fernando Tavares questioning the project’s planning.
The former board member said in a LinkedIn post that projects involving millions of euros require rigorous scenario work, including regulatory risks and contingencies, before any launch.
He viewed the decision as not entirely unexpected, noting that in a sector founded on pluralism and editorial diversity, direct club ownership of a media outlet could raise concerns for a regulator.
He framed the episode as a moment for internal reflection on how large projects are prepared and assessed within the club.
Alternatives he proposed include closer integration of the club’s television channel with other media platforms to build synergies and optimise resources.
