Former Celtic star Charlie Mulgrew has insisted that selling Kyogo Furahashi in the winter transfer window and getting Jota back was great business for the Bhoys.

The Bhoys were mostly quiet in the recently-concluded transfer window but notably sold their Japanese talisman Kyogo to French club Rennes.

They also signed Jota, who left them in 2023 for £25m, and the Glasgow giants got him back for only £8.4m from Rennes.

Mulgrew believes Celtic did a brilliant job by securing £10m for 30-year-old Kyogo and getting back Jota as well.

The former Bhoy feels that Adam Idah is a capable backup and Japanese forward Daizen Maeda is also a player who has the qualities to play as a number 9.

“I think it was great business personally”, Mulgrew said on Premier Sports post-match show when he was asked about Kyogo’s departure.

“I think, to get £10m for Kyogo, although he was a great player here and did really well.

“At the age, he was at and then having Idah sitting there and bringing Jota in, I think was great business.

“I think it was proven today that Maeda could be that great option going up front and obviously, to get winger options as well, so I think it was great business.”

Maeda scored a hat-trick, playing as a striker, against Raith Rovers in the Scottish Cup on Saturday and it remains to be seen if Idah and Maeda will be able to produce the numbers to make up for Kyogo’s exit.
