Aiden McGeady was highly regarded as a youth player and showed why after scoring on his debut against Hearts at Tynecastle in 2004. Aiden would go on to play 252 games for the club scoring 37 goals winning four Scottish Premier League titles, two Scottish cups and a League Cup.

The Pittodrie assist

Aiden was a highly talented player and as well as being capable of scoring a goal he was just as effective with his assists. One of the most memorable being the assist he laid on for Scott McDonald at Pittodrie in 2008 when he produced a superb turn and cross that allowed Skippy to nod into the net. It was one of those occasions where the assist was celebrated more than the goal itself.

To Russia with love

Aiden was a real entertainer and one of the best players to have come through our youth system. He earned himself a big money move to Spartak Moscow in 2010 when he moved to Russia in a £10 million move and that money funded a Neil Lennon led squad rebuild.

After four years in Russian football he moved back to Britain with Everton being his destination. Sadly for Aiden McGeady he never quite rediscovered the form of his Celtic days, but he still had a decent career at a few other English clubs most notably Sunderland, before heading back up to Scotland with Hibs and finally Ayr United.

An impressive 93 caps for Ireland

He won 93 caps for the Republic of Ireland, scored five goals for his country and played at two major tournaments.

It wouldn’t be harsh to say that Aiden could have much better than he was, but he still had a very good career and will always be remembered with great fondness by the Celtic supporters. All the best for the future Aiden.
