Former Gunner, Mark McGuinness, insists he has “nothing to prove” after sealing a move to Sheffield United, despite enduring a painful relegation campaign with Luton Town.

The 24-year-old defender, once highly regarded in Arsenal’s academy, became Luton’s record signing last summer when he left Cardiff in a deal worth up to £10m, a move that also netted Arsenal £2m from a 20% sell-on clause.

But he was unable to prevent the Hatters’ drop to League One in their second successive relegation, a drop he describes as “hugely disappointing.”

“Last season was frustrating. It’s not what anyone expected or anyone wanted,” McGuinness told The Football League Paper. “But that’s the Championship. It’s never easy. It’s never straightforward. Nobody has a crystal ball and can tell you what’s going to happen.

“Ultimately, we just didn’t perform. We didn’t get to grips with the competitiveness of the Championship and with being in a dogfight and we paid the consequences.”

Asked if he felt pressure to justify Luton’s outlay, McGuinness was unequivocal. “No, that doesn’t matter to me. I don’t control what people pay for me. I don’t see it as a measure of my worth. I just get my head down and crack on. I’m not one of these guys who feels I have something to prove. I know what I can do. It’s more about learning from the mistakes we made and putting them right.”

McGuinness’s return to Sheffield on a four-year deal carries added edge given his popular loan spell at Wednesday during their 2022-23 promotion campaign. He acknowledges the Steel City rivalry but frames his choice as purely professional. “Listen, I know that some people will be unhappy. And I understand that. But I had to put that out of my mind. I had to make a purely footballing decision, and that’s what this is. I’m at a point in my career where the things that I want and the things that Sheffield United want are perfectly aligned.”

Signed by Arsenal at the age of 10, he scored in a pre-season friendly against MK Dons in 2020 but never made a competitive first-team appearance before moving to Cardiff in 2021.

With over 150 senior games now behind him and a Republic of Ireland debut earned in 2024, he has made good on the promise that once saw him tipped as one to watch in north London.
