Trevor Carson, the former Hartlepool United and Sunderland goalkeeper, has retired after a knee injury, just over a month after agreeing to join Queen of the South.

The club said in a statement that the 38-year-old had decided to retire. After a tough pre-season he could not guarantee his fitness for the full campaign and informed the manager to allow time to find a replacement, while the announcement described it as a major blow, praised his career and experience, and appreciated his honesty.

An eight-times capped Northern Ireland international, Carson began his professional career at Sunderland and gained senior experience on loans with Chesterfield, Lincoln City and Hull City. He left the Black Cats in the summer of 2012 without a first-team appearance, then joined Cheltenham Town. He moved to Hartlepool in 2015.

He helped Pools reach the FA Cup third round in 2016 before a 2-1 home defeat by Derby County, whose line-up included Darren Bent and Andi Weimann. After 63 appearances across two seasons at Victoria Park he joined Motherwell.

Carson remained in Scotland with Dundee United, St Mirren, Ross County and Dundee in recent seasons. He also had a spell with Portsmouth. He had been preparing for the new League One season with the Scottish club.
