Thiago Alcantara has decided to retire from professional football after leaving Liverpool this summer.

The Spanish midfielder has struggled with injury problems in recent campaigns and featured for just five minutes in the Premier League in 2023-24, due to hip and muscular issues.

Liverpool decided against renewing his contract at the end of last season and Thiago has now decided to call time on his career, rather than pursue a new opportunity.

The 33-year-old came through the ranks at Barcelona and won four La Liga titles and the Champions League among his honours with the Catalans, before joining Bayern Munich in 2013.

Seven decorated seasons in German football followed, as Thiago won seven Bundeglisa titles, four DFB-Pokal trophies and a second Champions League.

Liverpool agreed a £20m deal to sign the midfielder in 2020 but his time with the Reds was blighted with fitness problems. He played an integral part in the club’s FA Cup and League Cup double in 2021-22 but made just 68 league appearances across four seasons at Anfield.

At international level, Thiago – who was also eligible to represent Brazil and Italy – scored twice in 42 caps for Spain. Fabrizio Romano has revealed the midfielder’s decision to retire and plan for ‘a new chapter in football after few months planning’.
