Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim is eyeing midfielders to bolster his ranks with quite a few of his high-profile stars expected to depart, either this month or once the season concludes.
Casemiro was left on the bench yet again with the Portuguese opting to start academy ace Toby Collyer from the start against Rangers.
The lack of game time is sure to be rankling the Brazilian who has already seen a move to Saudi Arabia to reunite with former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo slip away.
Chances are expected to be few and far between now and the end of the campaign as he simply does not have the engine to operate in Amorim’s system.
And despite earning a rare start on Thursday, Christian Eriksen’s future also lies away from Old Trafford with his contract up in the summer.
The head coach asked INEOS for reinforcements in the middle of the park and owing to the club’s PSR woes, a reunion with Angel Gomes, currently plying his trade for Lille, made a lot of sense as he is set to become a free agent next summer.
Fans will already know all about the Englishman, who came up through the ranks at Carrington, before eventually leaving for Lille back in 2020 after a contract dispute.
Since his move to Ligue 1, the 24-year-old has completely remodelled his game and now he not only excels as an attacking midfielder, but can also do a great job in a deep-lying position.
Such versatility would fit well with what Amorim is trying to build with his system needing a lot of midfielders instead of traditional wingers.
However, Givemesport have claimed that the England international, who is eager to return to the Premier League, fancies a move to Tottenham Hotspur over a return to his old stomping ground.
West Ham’s new boss Graham Potter is also a fan of his talents but he is set to face rejection if Dean Jones‘ report is anything to go by.
“Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a significant boost in their bid to beat the likes of West Ham United and Manchester United to the signing of Angel Gomes as the Lille star is keen to embark on a fresh challenge at Hotspur Way instead of the London Stadium or Old Trafford, GIVEMESPORT sources have revealed.
“GMS sources have been informed that Tottenham are putting together a proposal for Gomes at a time when West Ham have been trying to beat them to his services, while Manchester United have stopped short of lodging an offer at this stage, allowing Postecoglou to steal a march.”
The London-born star’s exploits in recent times which has seen him break into the England set-up have seen Newcastle, Aston Villa and plenty of European giants circle for his signature.
And whoever eventually wins the race will have to fork out a significant sum in terms of wages with the report claiming Gomes will ask for £150,000-per-week, up from the measly £11,500-per-week he currently earns at Lille.
