Christian Eriksen has agreed a deal to join Wolfsburg following his departure from Manchester United, marking a fresh chapter for the Denmark international in the Bundesliga.
The 33-year-old midfielder has signed a contract that will keep him at the Volkswagen Arena until the summer of 2027. It is the first time Eriksen has taken on a challenge in Germany, having previously played in England, Italy and the Netherlands.
Eriksen’s spell at Old Trafford concluded at the end of last season after three campaigns in Manchester. Across 107 appearances in all competitions, he contributed eight goals and played a key role in two trophy successes — the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.
His arrival in 2022 added much-needed control and creativity to the midfield under Erik ten Hag, with Eriksen often operating as a link between defence and attack. While injuries limited certain periods of his time at the club, his influence in possession and experience at the highest level were consistently valued by Man Utd’s coaching staff.
In signing for Wolfsburg, Eriksen begins a new venture in a league renowned for its intensity and tactical variety. Speaking after the announcement, he highlighted the clarity of vision from manager Paul Simonis as a decisive factor.
“Wolfsburg is my first club in the Bundesliga — I’m really looking forward to this new adventure. I immediately sensed that Paul Simonis has a clear idea for the team and for me personally,” Eriksen said.
Another element in the decision was the presence of several Denmark teammates within the squad. That familiarity is expected to smooth his adaptation both on and off the pitch, adding to the attraction of the move.
Eriksen’s journey through European football has been both decorated and poignant. A graduate of Ajax’s academy, he made his name at Tottenham before securing a move to Inter Milan, where he won Serie A.
His return to the Premier League with Brentford was one of football’s most uplifting stories, coming less than a year after he suffered a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020. That comeback not only revitalised his career but also led to his signing for Man Utd, where he added silverware and stability to his CV.
In recent months, Eriksen had been training with Malmo, the Swedish club based in his homeland, while assessing options as a free agent. Wolfsburg ultimately offered a long-term project and a stage to continue competing at a high level.
For Wolfsburg, Eriksen’s arrival represents both experience and leadership. His ability to dictate tempo, deliver set-pieces and provide vision in attacking phases will be vital for a side seeking to push higher up the Bundesliga table.
For Man Utd, his departure opens the door for younger midfielders to establish themselves, though Eriksen’s professionalism and calm influence will be missed around Carrington.
Eriksen’s move underlines how, even at 33, he remains eager to test himself in new environments. Wolfsburg gain a player with over a decade of elite football experience, while the midfielder himself gains an opportunity to shape a final significant chapter in his career.
