Whilst expectations around Paul Pogba’s (33) return were tempered, the Frenchman did, nonetheless, underwhelm during his debut season at AS Monaco.

He joined the Principality club in the summer, signing a two-year deal, following his return from a doping ban. Upon his arrival, CEO Thiago Scuro said that it would take around three months to get Pogba up to speed.

La Pioche would eventually return at the end of November. However, injuries would continue to limit him. He would go on to play just six games in his debut season, making just one start, against FC Metz at the start of May. He would accumulate just 115 minutes of football across the campaign.

However, according to Damien Perrinelle, who was assistant to Adi Hutter and then Sébastien Pocognoli last season, there is maybe cause for hope. “Pogba needs to rediscover consistency. I can tell you that, at the end of the season, it started to become a lot more interesting,” said Perrinelle, who left prior to Pocognoli’s exit earlier this week. Having recently completed his coaching badges, he is looking to become a first-team coach.

Perrinelle did add, however, that expectations must still be tempered. “If you are expecting to see the Pogba of 2018 again, that will be difficult,” he told RMC Sport.
