Igor Tudor is reportedly set to leave his interim role at Tottenham Hotspur, with a former Newcastle United manager under consideration to take charge before next month’s trip to Sunderland.

According to TeamTalk, Tudor is expected to depart by mutual consent after weeks of internal talks, with an agreement to act if Spurs lost on Sunday, and he is ready to step away following the death of his father, Mario, while a shortlist featuring former Monaco manager Adi Hutter and Chris Hughton is viewed as viable to step in.

Tudor took over after Thomas Frank’s departure last month. His first match brought a 4-1 home defeat to Arsenal. He has collected one point from five Premier League games, a 1-1 draw at Liverpool.

He did oversee a 3-2 home win over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League last 16 second leg, but Spurs were eliminated after a 5-2 first-leg loss in Madrid. Their league return brought a 3-0 home defeat by fellow strugglers Nottingham Forest, leaving them one point and one place above the relegation zone.

Hughton, who made more than 300 appearances for Spurs and spent 14 years on the staff as reserve-team manager, first-team coach, caretaker and assistant, left in February 2008 to join Newcastle and was made permanent manager just over a year later after an interim spell. He remains the last manager to lead Newcastle to a home Tyne-Wear derby win over Sunderland, in October 2010.

Should Spurs proceed with a change, the incoming interim’s first game would be at Sunderland on Sunday 12 April, as the Black Cats chase Europe and aim to deepen their visitors’ relegation concerns.
