Former Rangers star Morelos faces up to 30 years in jail

By now we’ve all seen the Alfredo Morelos story, and while he’s no longer a Rangers player of course, the sliding doors of the miscreant Colombian’s career are quite stark, and worth offering a word or two on.

If we think back to 2019/2020, Morelos was Europa group stage top scorer, he was on fire, and becoming one of Europe’s most coveted hitmen. He’d talked up a future in the Premier League so many times, making it clear that’s where he saw himself, but when Ligue 1 side Lille offered £16.5M for him, he was more than happy with that.

Unfortunately for Morelos, the club wanted Dembele Dollars, they wanted £20M, and rejected the bid. Lille never came back in.

Porto did, and he’d have been happy with that one too, but it fell through as well, and Morelos, like so many other players in recent years, was ‘stuck’ at Ibrox.

He finally got his departure in summer 2023 and expected Europe’s top sides to come begging. Not a single team with any grandeur made a serious offer and the boy ended up having to resort back to South America, and Brazil, with a bottom-feeding move to struggling Santos, who ended up relegated.

And then ending up on loan at Nacional in his homeland of Colombia before Wednesday’s horrific events which have effectively ended his life.

In short, the moron stupidly got into a car while intoxicated, swerved wildly into the wrong lane and knock over a cyclist/motorbike, with the victim now reportedly fighting for their life in hospital.

If the victim makes it, which everyone is praying for, Morelos is going to jail for driving while intoxicated and causing a collision. There is next-to-no chance he will be spared the clink for that.

But if the poor person doesn’t survive this, the Colombian’s life is completely done with a sentence that could be up to 30 years for Involuntary Manslaughter while DUI.

That sliding doors moment where Morelos could have ended up in Ligue 1 or Portugal, at the height of his powers, instead turned into his poor attitude and desperation to escape Rangers and taking any old terrible move once a free agent, which has deteriorated into what has happened now.

We hope for the victim’s sake desperately that they survive, Morelos unfortunately has made his own bed with some very, very bad decisions.

The only upshot is he’s not a Rangers player any more.
