In the 55th minute of Arsenal’s match against Fulham, the Gunners could have been awarded a penalty, but Viktor Gyokeres stayed on his feet.
The Swedish striker is suffering from a serious goal drought at the moment and is eager to end it as soon as possible. He found himself clean through on goal when Jorge Cuenca made contact in an attempt to stop him. Despite the clear contact, Gyokeres refused to go to ground, determined to continue his run and attempt to score, and the referee did not award a spot kick.
Former referee Keith Hackett observed the incident and suggested that the contact should have resulted in a penalty. However, he explained that Gyokeres’ decision to remain on his feet influenced the referee’s decision. Hackett believes that had the striker fallen after the contact, a penalty would almost certainly have been awarded. The situation highlights the delicate balance between a player’s instinct to continue and the need to assist the referee in recognising fouls.
Hackett commented via Football Insider, “Anthony Taylor was in an excellent position. Frankly, the player not going to ground was the foundation of Taylor not recognising the foul. Clearly, if the player had immediately gone to ground, Taylor, I think, would have been pointing to the penalty spot. Arsenal were unlucky not to get a penalty kick.”

It is difficult to fault Gyokeres for his decision, as it is clear that his primary aim was to score. The incident underscores the pressure on strikers, particularly those experiencing a goal drought, to seize every opportunity and maintain focus on finding the back of the net. While the referee did not award the penalty, the moment illustrates both the fine margins in football and the challenges players face in balancing instinct with tactical awareness.
For Arsenal, the incident may have been a missed opportunity, but it also demonstrates Gyokeres’ determination and commitment to helping his team. As he continues to search for his first goal in recent matches, moments like these underline the potential he offers and the urgency with which he wants to end his scoring drought.
