Carrick delivers breakthrough after years of frustration

Four years later, United finally find the answer to Tottenham
Manchester United beat Tottenham 2-0 to end a long run without wins against Spurs and boost their Champions League hopes.
Manchester United finally put end to painful run against Tottenham Hotspur after securing 2-0 victory at Old Trafford.
For almost four years, Tottenham had been major obstacle for United.
The London club denied them key results in the race for Champions League places and even went on to beat them in European final deepening the frustration for the Red Devils and their fans.
That pattern changed under new head coach Michael Carrick who delivered United’s fourth straight Premier League win since taking charge.
United’s struggles against Spurs began on 27 April 2023 when they surrendered 2-0 lead in North London and settled for 2-2 draw.
The problems continued through defeats in August 2023, another draw in January 2024 and heavy 3-0 loss at Old Trafford in September 2024.
The situation worsened in February 2025, when Tottenham claimed 1-0 win that damaged United’s Champions League push.
The lowest point followed on 21 May 2025 when Spurs defeated United 1-0 in the Europa League final lifting European trophy at United’s expense.
Even earlier this season, United needed 96th-minute header from Matthijs de Ligt to avoid defeat in 2-2 draw on 8 November 2025.
Under Carrick, United looked calm and focused. Goals from Bryan Mbeumo & Bruno Fernandes secured the win while Tottenham were reduced to ten men after Cristian Romero was sent off in the 29 minute.
United controlled the game registering 10 shot on target and allowing just one effort on goal.
Carrick also confirmed that the opening goal came from planned set-piece, designed by analyst Kaita Hasegawa and assistant Johnny Evans showing the quick impact of his coaching staff.
The win leaves Manchester United fourth in the Premier League, with firm control over their Champions League fate.
Confidence is growing within the squad, with attacking players combining well and young talents like Kobbie Mainoo settling back into midfield.
Carrick remains unbeaten in seven match across his caretaker spells and Old Trafford is beginning to believe again.
While tougher tests lie ahead, United finally cleared one of their biggest mental barriers.
