France consolidated fifth place in UEFA’s coefficient this week as PSG and Strasbourg reached their respective European semi-finals, banking valuable points before next season when the gap to Portugal will narrow.
PSG again beat Liverpool in the Champions League, 2-0 on the night and 2-0 in the first leg. Strasbourg thrashed Mainz 4-0 at La Meinau after a 0-2 first-leg defeat in the Conference League. According to L'Équipe, France sit on 82.172 coefficient points and that fifth place is already secure for this season.
Ligue 1 will keep four Champions League berths, one via qualifying, and seven European spots next season, as in 2027-2028.
Portugal are sixth on 72.766. Sporting failed to overturn Arsenal, drawing 0-0 after a 0-1 first leg in the Champions League, and Porto were knocked out by Nottingham Forest, 0-1 after 1-1 in the first leg, in the Europa League. Braga alone reached the Europa League semi-finals with a 4-2 win at Betis after a 1-1 first leg.
Points won until the end of May will matter because 2021-22, when Ligue 1 outscored Portugal by five and a half points, 18.416 to 12.916, will drop out of the five-year total. In this season’s table, France are sixth on 17.535, closing on Italy on 19.000 after Bologna and Fiorentina exited Europe. Spain on 21.406 and Germany on 21.214 will contest the second extra Champions League place, with England having already secured the first.
