France unveiled their pale green away shirt for the 2026 World Cup on Monday, a nod to the Statue of Liberty and the latest in a long run of unconventional kits. According to L'Équipe, it continues a tradition of standout designs for Les Bleus.

Back in 1978, France’s third group match in Argentina against Hungary began with an admin mix-up as both sides turned up in white. The solution was to borrow green and white striped shirts from local side Kimberley Football Club.

In May 2004, for FIFA’s centenary, France faced Brazil at the Stade de France in throwback outfits. The two most recent world champions at the time wore period-style kits to mark the occasion.

In May 2008, on the eve of the Euro, Raymond Domenech’s team ran out in red at Grenoble’s Stade des Alpes. Bafétimbi Gomis scored twice on his senior debut that night.

On 29 March 2011, France met Croatia in a shirt that stuck in the memory, the marinière.

During a South American tour, Didier Deschamps’ side played Brazil in sky blue, a 3-0 defeat that nonetheless immortalised the look.

March 2019 brought the FFF centenary, marked by a special, classic and elegant shirt against Iceland.

At the 2022 World Cup, the rarely used away shirt echoed toile de Jouy, bringing together symbols of France’s cultural richness and historic heritage.

The new away kit, named "Liberté", will be worn at the 2026 tournament, which will be staged in part in the United States.
