Referee François Letexier overturned a Ziko goal after a VAR review in Tuesday’s last 16 tie with Argentina, before the forward finished a near-identical move minutes later.

L'Équipe notes a significant VAR intervention in the tie. Egypt had led since Yasser Ibrahim’s 15th-minute opener and almost killed it in the 58th minute when Haissem Hassan carried the ball, found Mohamed Salah and the former Liverpool winger released Ziko to finish past Emiliano Martinez.

Having initially awarded the goal, Letexier reviewed the footage after a VAR referral. Replays focused on the start of the move, where Lisandro Martinez was fouled near Egypt’s area, his foot trodden on by a defender who then won the ball, leading the referee to disallow it.

As Argentina pushed for an equaliser, Egypt struck on the break with the pattern reversed. Salah paused then slipped in Hassan, who beat his marker in the box and crossed for Ziko to score in the 67th minute past Martinez.

The upset edged closer for the Pharaohs.
