Hamburger SV have strengthened their squad with the signing of Kinga Szemik from West Ham United. The Poland international goalkeeper arrives in Hamburg after two seasons in the Barclays Women’s Super League and brings valuable experience ahead of the new Frauen-Bundesliga campaign.

The arrival of Szemik gives HSV another experienced option between the posts. During her time at West Ham, she made 45 appearances across all competitions and kept three clean sheets in her second season.

She also represented Poland at UEFA Women’s Euro 2025, where the nation competed in its first ever major international tournament.

Experience at the highest level

One of the biggest strengths Szemik brings to Hamburger SV is her experience. Playing regularly in the WSL means facing some of Europe’s best attackers every week. As a result, she has developed the composure and consistency needed to perform under pressure.

International football has also helped her grow. Representing Poland on the European stage has given Szemik valuable experience in high-pressure matches, which could prove crucial as HSV compete in Germany’s top division.

What Kinga Szemik can bring to Hamburger SV

Modern goalkeepers are expected to do more than make saves, and Szemik has shown she can meet those demands. She is a calm presence in goal, communicates well with her defence and has the confidence to help build attacks from the back.

Her leadership could also benefit Hamburger SV. Goalkeepers often organise the defensive line, and Szemik’s experience in England and with the Polish national team should help bring confidence to the players in front of her.

Healthy competition is another advantage. Adding an experienced international goalkeeper raises standards within the squad and gives the coaching staff another reliable option throughout the season.

An exciting signing for HSV

The signing of Kinga Szemik looks like a smart move for Hamburger SV. She arrives with experience from one of Europe’s strongest leagues, international pedigree and the mentality needed to compete at the highest level.

While every new signing needs time to settle, Szemik has already shown she can perform in demanding environments. If she adapts quickly to life in Germany, the Poland international could become an important player for HSV as they look to establish themselves in the Frauen-Bundesliga.

For Hamburger SV supporters, there is every reason to be excited about what Kinga Szemik can bring to the club this season.
