Fridolina Rolfo
Fridolina Rolfo says she felt that Manchester United were missing their usual “togetherness” as they lost 5-2 to Wolfsburg in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
It was United’s first loss in the first phase of the competition, with Rolfo and Melvine Malard on the scoresheet for the visitors, and Ella Peddemors (2), Lineth Beerensteyn (2) and Vivien Endemann all scoring for the German team.
And Rolfo spoke to the official club website immediately after the match to reflect on the defeat to one of her former teams.
“It was a very disappointing loss today,” she said. “It’s a hard one to take.”
Asked to pinpoint what had gone wrong, she said: “It’s hard to say now after the game, because I felt like we had a good start in the game, but it totally changed. We were not compact enough, our defence was not good enough.
“It felt like we were not having this togetherness that I usually feel when we play together, so that was something missing. We have to learn from this and look through what we did wrong, and hopefully win the next couple of games we have after the international team break.”
Adding that she was “a bit sad” that the international break was going to prevent United from getting back to winning ways as quickly as possible, she was also pragmatic that they had had a great start to the competition.
“It’s a process, we’re working towards a goal, we want to win all games we’re playing, but we also have to see today that Wolfsburg, they are a good team, they performed well, but I know we can play much better than this, so [we must] learn from our mistakes and get better.”
And with three wins already under their collective belt, Rolfo assured fans that they were focused on bouncing straight back when they host Lyon and then Juventus next month.
“We are going to give it our all,” she said. “We have two more games left in the Champions League first part. We are going to give it our all. We want to get as many points as possible so we are putting ourselves in a good position.
“That’s what we have to do.”
