German chancellor Friedrich Merz defended the national team after their World Cup last 32 exit to Paraguay, calling for unity as criticism mounted across Germany.
Germany drew 1-1 then lost 3-4 on penalties in the last 32. Bild said the chancellor's post was ridiculous, and denounced a disastrous display from a side it described as slow, dull and lethargic.
Shortly after the final whistle, Merz wrote that, although the elimination hurt, the match had thrilled the country. He praised the squad's commitment and team spirit, and said Germans were proud of them.
In a later message on Tuesday afternoon, he urged compatriots to stand together in defeat, adding that success is shared and those with the eagle on their chest deserve support, not mockery. He posted the remarks on X.
The result prolonged Germany's wait for a World Cup knockout victory, a run stretching back to their 2014 triumph.
