FC Bayern conceded their first defeat of the season on the 19th Bundesliga matchday, losing 2-1 to FC Augsburg and squandering a 1-0 lead – at home in the Allianz Arena of all places. However, it was not just the result that was the focus of attention after the final whistle, but also a scene at the press conference that caused an unexpected laugh
In sporting terms, Saturday afternoon was a setback for the German record champions. Despite taking an early lead and dominating the game for long stretches, Bayern were unable to control the match and decide it early. Augsburg proved efficient, consistently exploiting Munich’s defensive sloppiness and turning the game around. For FCB, this not only meant the loss of three points, but also the end of an impressive run without defeat in the Bundesliga
Vincent Kompany must have been particularly annoyed by the course of the game. His team had the game under control for long periods, but lacked the necessary consistency in the final third. After the break, Bayern increasingly lost control, looked sloppy in phases in the build-up and vulnerable in the transition. Augsburg exploited this phase ice-cold and turned the course of the game on its head
The fact that such a defeat is part of a development process is part of the Belgian’s self-image, which made it all the more remarkable how calm and composed Kompany appeared in the aftermath of the game. He neither made excuses nor let his emotions boil over. Instead, he showed a mixture of clarity and composure – and even demonstrated a sense of humour at the press conference
This was triggered by a misunderstanding with a reporter, who asked FCA coach Manuel Baum about the team’s evening program and mentioned an alleged „pint of beer“ in the dressing room. Kompany initially misunderstood the question and reacted irritably with the words: „A what?“ Only after a brief explanation did it become clear that the question was not directed at him
Nevertheless, the Bayern coach did not miss the opportunity to give an answer: „No, we’re not that deep yet,“ Kompany clarified, causing laughter in the room
Nevertheless, the scene fit into the overall picture of a coach who keeps calm even in difficult moments and provides his team with a clear framework. Despite the first defeat of the season, FC Bayern’s starting position remains comfortable. The decisive factor will be how the team now reacts to this setback.
