Michael Edwards Exit Leaves Liverpool Facing Big Decisions Over Salah Successor and Structure

Liverpool are losing Michael Edwards again, and this time the timing matters. He departs two years into a three-year contract after returning in March 2024 to help steer the club through the post-Jürgen Klopp transition. That part of the job was completed. The wider brief across Fenway Sports Group’s football operation clearly went another way.

In his statement, Edwards said: “Liverpool is in a strong position, with outstanding people, a clear direction and the foundations in place for continued success.

“When I returned, I was excited not only by the opportunity to help guide Liverpool through an important period of transition, but also by the chance to help shape FSG’s wider football ambitions.

“While that broader project ultimately evolved differently to how we had originally envisaged, I am proud of the work our team undertook in presenting ownership with a broad range of thoughtful and well-developed options for the future.”

Michael Edwards departure shifts focus

This is the core issue. Liverpool may be stable, but stability at executive level still matters. Edwards was brought back because FSG trusted him, and because his record at Anfield was too strong to ignore. He first joined in 2011, became sporting director in 2016, and left in 2022 after helping build the side that delivered the club’s first league title in 30 years in 2020.

His fingerprints were all over some of Liverpool’s smartest recruitment calls, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mané, Andy Robertson and Virgil van Dijk among them. That matters now because one of the biggest jobs of the summer is replacing Salah after his exit at the end of last season. Losing the man who helped bring him in adds another layer of difficulty.

Liverpool transfer strategy under scrutiny

There is also noise around Richard Hughes, with speculation that the sporting director could follow Edwards out. If that happens, Liverpool are not dealing with one departure, but the possible reshaping of the football structure in one go. That is never ideal heading into a season that already demands major squad decisions.

For ownership, the message is clear. The football side needs clarity, quickly. Liverpool cannot afford drift while sorting out succession planning in the boardroom and on the pitch at the same time.

FSG football structure faces next test

Mike Gordon admitted the group were “naturally disappointed” by the decision. He said: “Michael has made an extraordinary contribution to Liverpool Football Club and Fenway Sports Group throughout his time with our organization.

“When Michael returned in 2024, he did so at a pivotal moment for Liverpool, embracing a broader leadership role across our football interests in the process.

“Throughout both periods he has consistently demonstrated exceptional judgement, integrity and an unwavering commitment to building a strong football organisation for the long term.

“His return to the organization saw Liverpool successfully navigate a significant period of transition before securing the club’s historic 20th English league title, an achievement to which Michael made an important contribution.

“While we are naturally disappointed to see him leave, we will always be grateful for everything he has given. On behalf of John Henry, Tom Werner and everyone at Fenway Sports Group, I would like to thank Michael for his outstanding service, friendship and leadership, and wish him and his family every success and happiness in the future.”

The facts are simple. Edwards leaves with his reputation intact. Liverpool remain well placed, but good positions can erode quickly if leadership gaps open up. Replacing Salah is hard enough. Replacing executive certainty at the same time makes the job harder.
