Fulham dismayed as Marco Silva leaves for Benfica, Tony Khan admits surprise | OneFootball

Fulham have been left disappointed by Marco Silva’s decision to quit the club. According to Glorioso 1904, vice-chairman and director of football Tony Khan expressed surprise in an interview with the club’s media.

Khan said the focus has already shifted to appointing a new head coach and that work to identify candidates is under way. He added that, until very recently, the expectation at Craven Cottage was that Silva would stay.

He explained they learned less than two weeks ago that Silva had changed his mind, after previously indicating he wanted to remain and was planning to do so. Khan also said the club understood the reasons behind the switch.

Silva became a highly respected figure among supporters and within the club structure. He arrived in the summer of 2021 after leaving Everton, and quickly made his mark.

Despite Fulham’s efforts to keep him, Silva has opted to return to Portugal to take charge of Benfica in Lisbon. The London club have begun the search for a successor to one of their most influential recent managers.
