Gabigol struck twice on Neymar’s season debut as Santos beat Velo Clube at Vila Belmiro to reach the Paulista quarter-finals.

According to Diario Do Peixe, this was Santos’ best performance of the campaign and it rounded off their group stage in style.

Goalkeeper Gabriel Brazão made a fine save in the first minute and had little else to do. Barreal’s corner led to one of Gabigol’s goals, while Luan Peres impressed at centre-back.

Gabigol also laid on a superb header for Moisés. Thaciano found the net too, supplied by Gabriel Bontempo, whose energy improved the midfield.

Willian Arão looked short of rhythm before Gabriel Menino replaced him and produced the night’s standout strike. Mayke was subdued but better after the interval, with Zé Ivaldo and Vinícius Lira steady in defence.

Rollheiser came on and scored with his first touch, and Rony, introduced with 15 minutes remaining, provided the assist. Neymar made his first appearance of the year and showed his usual class. Coach Juan Pablo Vojvoda started Moisés and handled his second-half changes well.
