Gabigol has been given a one-match ban and Santos fined R$ 1,000 by the STJD’s Third Disciplinary Commission after the 3-1 win over Vitória. According to Diario Do Peixe, the decisions came on Wednesday 3.

He will serve the ban when Santos return to the Brasileirão. It was slated for Botafogo, but that match may move due to Santos’ first playoff match, so he could instead miss Chapecoense pending CBF confirmation.

In the 3-1 victory at Vila Belmiro on Saturday 30, Santos led 2-0 through Miguelito and Barreal before Gabigol headed the third. He then gestured for silence towards the crowd before making an obscene sign.

He had earlier been booked for climbing a low wall to celebrate with home fans. After VAR intervention, referee Rafael Rodrigo Klein showed a straight red at 14 minutes of the second half.

Prosecutor Beatriz Silva said Santos are repeat offenders for delays and highlighted Gabigol’s influence. Defence lawyer Dr Marcelo Mendes argued the gesture targeted a Santos fan, said the striker did not realise the ban covered his own supporters, accepted fault and sought a warning.

Rapporteur Rafael Bozzano rejected the defence and ruled out converting the penalty to a warning. Auditor Marina Volpato, rapporteur José Maria Philomeno and president Adriene Hassen agreed.

Santos were cited under CBJD article 206 for a delayed restart and Gabigol under article 258 for conduct contrary to discipline. The second half began one minute late after Santos returned two minutes behind schedule.
