Gabriel Gudmundsson has eased injury fears after a Sweden knock, offering a positive update before tonight’s World Cup decider with Poland.
The Leeds left-back played in Thursday’s 3-1 play-off semi-final win over Ukraine but was replaced midway through the second half. He had ice on his knee after full-time.
“It's calm,” Gudmundsson told Fotboll Direkt ahead of tonight’s meeting with Poland. “I've been practicing and there's nothing strange about it.”
“I immediately felt that it was a bang and not a twist. If it had been a twist, I probably wouldn't have been standing here now.”
Gudmundsson has impressed international boss Graham Potter, starting against Ukraine despite competition at left-back. He is currently ahead of Daniel Svensson and Samuel Dahl, who play for Borussia Dortmund and Benfica.
“It's really not something I think about. I play in England match after match, that's the only thing I focus on.”
“I think it should be that there is high competition. It makes you get better and better. Tomorrow [tonight vs Poland] is probably the most important match of my career.”
His pre-match media appearance might suggest he keeps his place. Victory would send the Leeds defender to a first World Cup across the USA, Canada and Mexico this summer.
He is the only Leeds player still in these play-offs, with Wales beaten on penalties by Bosnia & Herzegovina last week. Joel Piroe’s Suriname debut also ended in defeat to Bolivia.
