Leeds United left-back Gabriel Gudmundsson has eased fears over a Sweden injury scare ahead of tonight’s World Cup play-off decider with Poland, saying he has trained and feels fine.
The 26-year-old featured in the 3-1 semi-final win over Ukraine on Thursday, then went off midway through the second half after a knock. He initially tried to continue and had ice on his knee afterwards.
"It's calm. I've been practicing and there's nothing strange about it." He was speaking to Fotboll Direkt.
"I immediately felt that it was a bang and not a twist. If it had been a twist, I probably wouldn't have been standing here now."
Gudmundsson has impressed Graham Potter, starting against Ukraine despite competition from Daniel Svensson and Samuel Dahl, who play for Borussia Dortmund and Benfica.
Being sent for pre-match media duties is often a positive sign, and he could keep his place tonight. Victory would take him to a first World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico this summer.
"It's really not something I think about. Tomorrow [tonight vs Poland] is probably the most important match of my career."
Gudmundsson is the only Leeds player still involved in these play-offs, with Wales beaten by Bosnia & Herzegovina on penalties last week. Joel Piroe’s Suriname debut ended in defeat to Bolivia.
