Gian Piero Gasperini confirmed that Paulo Dybala had to come off due to a ‘little physical problem’ during Roma’s 1-0 loss against Torino on Sunday, but assured the press that the issue ‘doesn’t seem too serious’.
Roma fell to their first defeat of the 2025-26 season at home against Torino in Sunday’s early Serie A kick-off: Giovanni Simeone providing the sole goal of the game.
Gasperini raised eyebrows with his team selection, leaving out recognised centre-forwards Evan Ferguson and Artem Dovbyk, and instead fielding Dybala and Matias Soule as his most advanced players against Toro.

Gasperini felt that the Argentine pair worked well together, but told DAZN that he had to take Dybala off due to a physical concern.
“Dybala had a small physical problem, so he had to come off. Let’s hope it’s nothing too serious,” Gasperini said in his post-match interview.

The Giallorossi head coach went into slightly more depth about Dybala’s potential injury during his post-match press conference.
“Dybala felt a strain while taking a free-kick,” Gasperini said (via Corriere dello Sport).
“The extent does not seem too serious, it doesn’t seem too bad,” he assured.
The Torino loss was Dybala’s first start of the 2025-26 season. He had appeared as a substitute in the 1-0 victories over Bologna and Pisa prior to the international break, and had been working his way back to full fitness after missing a large chunk of the second half of the 2024-25 campaign.
Gasperini also warned in his pre-match press conference that Dybala might not ‘have 90 minutes in him’ heading into the Torino clash, which proved to be the case.
Roma will hope to have their star attacker fit and available for their next Serie A clash, which will be the Derby della Capitale against fierce rivals Lazio next Sunday, on September 21.
