Gaviões da Fiel said in a statement this week that a Fantástico report, also part of GNT’s Cidade Subterrânea, distorted events by casting supporters as violent in coverage of unrest at Corinthians-Itaquera metro after the Corinthians v Vasco da Gama Copa do Brasil final.
The note argues that problems stemmed from restricted access and logistical blockades that disrupted the movement of thousands using public transport.
After the match, Corinthians supporters had reported excessive force by metro security. Police blockades to manage crowd flow around the stadium preceded an escalation in which station security used tear gas, pepper spray and fired rubber bullets, prompting panic among those present.
The note states that the imposed limits created artificial bottlenecks, causing disorganisation and discomfort, a context it says was absent from the broadcast, which instead favoured a sensational reading of events.
It also criticises selective editing and imagery that, in the group’s view, reinforce long-standing stigma around Corinthians fans. The text maintains that most present behaved peacefully and that structural failings in organisation and mobility were wrongly pinned on supporters.
The group rejects being framed as a symbol of disorder and intends to continue pressing the relevant authorities and the media for accountability and accuracy.
