The 7-2 Barcelona win over Newcastle United did not just produce another memorable European night. It also completed a remarkable squad-wide attacking milestone for Hansi Flick’s side.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Gerard Martin’s assist for Marc Bernal in the 2-1 made him the last outfield player in Barcelona’s senior squad to register at least one goal contribution this season. That means every outfield first-team player has now either scored or assisted across all competitions in 2025-26.

That is what makes Gerard’s contribution so notable. The defender, now increasingly established as a centre-back and one of Flick’s key pillars this season, was the only outfield player yet to record a goal contribution before the Newcastle game. In the 18th minute, after Newcastle had equalised, Gerard appeared at the far post from a Raphinha-delivered free-kick and squared the ball for Bernal to score.

And that was not even his only meaningful attacking action of the night. Gerard Martin’s line-breaking pass also helped initiate the move that ended with Fermin Lopez scoring Barcelona’s 4-2. So while the assist to Bernal officially completed the stat, his overall display underlined that his attacking influence extended beyond just one moment.

The bigger picture behind the feat is even more impressive. The report notes that only Joan Garcia and Wojciech Szczesny, both goalkeepers, remain without a goal contribution in the current first-team squad. Gerard’s assist therefore completed a rare and highly collective attacking spread across the outfield unit.

Lamine Yamal leads the internal ranking with 36 goal contributions, 21 goals, and 15 assists, while Fermin Lopez sits second on 28 and Raphinha third on 26. Gerard Martin now joins that list with his first contribution of the campaign.

For Barcelona, this is another sign of how well-rounded Flick’s team has become. Goals are not coming from just one or two stars anymore. Against Newcastle, Gerard Martin’s assist showed that everyone in Barca’s outfield setup is now contributing to the attacking output.
