Joshua Kimmich’s unavailability due to injury led to Bayern Munich defender Jonathan Tah donning the captain’s armband for Germany last night. The 29-year-old spoke on the experience as serving as the squad’s skipper in the mixed zone. The Bundesliga professional nevertheless – like his coach and colleagues – nevertheless admitted that the win left much to be desired in terms of the team’s overall performance.
“I’m grateful that we’re taking points home with us,” Tah said. “And I was very proud to serve as captain for the first time on the pitch. It was a very special experience for me and I was very grateful to have the privilege of experiencing this moment.
“We weren’t able to execute very well as a team,” Tah nevertheless added. “Especially when it came to winning second balls. We allowed [the opponent] too much space. We allowed too many counters. Everyone had to run back 15 meters in order to defend.
“That’s the reason we couldn’t close the game out earlier,” Tah concluded. “That’s the main point. We could have closed out the game much earlier and in a much more relaxed fashion.“
